PRESS RELEASE Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) strongly condemns attacking the VTV cameraman Rilwan Moosa while covering a protest organized by the opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP). We also want to note that journalists have been repeatedly targeted during the constant rallies organized by MDP. As it is the responsibility of the media to do news coverage on events, it is unacceptable to obstruct their work while exercising their duty in a democratic environment. We call on MDP to take necessary measurements to protect the journalists, and call on the security forces to protect and guard them. At the meantime, Maldives Broadcasting Corporation and Maldives Media Council should ensure a secure environment for press freedom, and should act in a more responsible manner. It is also important to get assistance for international agencies during such circumstances. Noting the fear that free and fair atmosphere in Maldives for press may diminish; we call on all the relevant authorities to protect the journalists. We also instruct journalists to wear the safety clothing when attending protests.
