MJA convey its good wishes to all the journalists in the Maldives.
On this remarkable day MJA call on the Government to distribute public service offices announcements eaqully for private media in an effort to help on financial constraints.
We call on the Government to facilitate or provide training opportunities for local journalists for strenthening media. And the Parliament to pass the bill on 'right to information' without any more delays.
MJA always wishes to see a responsible and effective journalism in the Maldives.

We have continuously said that the government gazette should be a mechanism to publish the laws and regulations.
But the government gazette which began with few pages has become very thick within the past three years, with nearly 250 pages. The gazette has been publishing different forms of announcements and advertisements without making any distinction. Beginning from short announcements of island councils, gazette has been publishing vacancy announcements and estimates for small projects. This has resulted for making an expensive form of mechanism, failing to meet its original purpose of establishment, which was to lower the costs.
Earlier, we have informed that publishing bid announcement on a gazette which publishes only twice a week may lead way to corruption. Also, it will kill the existence of newspapers. As we have warned, the newspapers Aafathis, Jazeera and Miadhu have been dissolved, when the government stopped publishing advertisements on these papers.
Gazette is a mechanism which is not widely circulated, widening ways for corruption.
Recently our organization has spoken to some of the editors, and unanimously agreed that the announcements and advertisements which are contrary to the spirit of the gazette should be given private media. So, we call on the government to publish announcement for estimates and small bids, vacancy announcements on private media, in a way meeting its real purpose.

Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) strongly condemns the violent attacks carried against the private TV station VTV today, by the protesters of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
MJA also condemns the attack against Haveeru videographer Sofwan Ibrahim by the protesters, by snatching his press card and smashing his camera.

A journalist from Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) is to take part in Summer Academy on Freedom and Responsibility in the South Asian Media organized by the International Institute for Journalism, Berlin in association with the Asian College of Journalism.
Ibrahim Mohamed, parliamentary reporter of Peoples Majlis will be representing MJA.
The programme will be held from 25 March to 7 April at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai.
The aim of the programme is to enhance the quality of journalism in South Asia. Representatives from South Asian countries will attend the programme and discuss on emerging media ecology and media system in their country.

PRESS RELEASE
Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) welcomes Maldives Broadcasting Commission’s (MBC) recent decision to grant license for local broadcasters, which gives authority to broadcast to the whole country.
We call on MBC to give license for the broadcasters who have not yet received the license, the way license was granted for RaajjeTV. DhiTV, SunFM and VTV have already applied for broadcasting license to expand their service with modern facilities. These media groups are among the established medias existing in the country.
